Accounting Manager

Job Description
Oversee and manage the daily operations (close, reconciliations, external reporting) of the accounting department by guiding team members, collaborating with key stakeholders, and designing and implementing process improvements.
Key Responsibilities
• Review and approve work prepared by various staff members (including journal entries and reconciliations) to ensure accuracy, consistency and timeliness
• Delegate tasks to ensure timely achievement of goals
• Optimize spread of work amongst the team; Ensure cross-training and back-up of all tasks
• Ensure accounting controls are executed on a timely basis
• Direct resolution of accounting technical problems, assist and support staff
• Draft audited financial statements and disclosures, as applicable
• Prepare financial analyses or reports with complex or new requirements
• Develop and roll out processes (journal entries, reconciliations, reporting) pertaining to new business or new accounting standards, as applicable
• Provide weekly status reporting on key processes and initiatives
• Research Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), summarize key requirements or disclosures and implement, as appropriate and applicable
• Make recommendations for process, system, policy and procedure changes and put them into practice
• Assist in coordinating with internal, external and insurance department auditors
• Assist with and coordinate team / staff development
• Supervise and evaluate performance for personnel
• Lead or participate in special projects
• Recruit and train a high performance team
• Provide and model a positive and supportive environment for staff
• Participate in the identification and development of analytical tools, reports, and systems to meet the needs of management
Experience
• 7 or more years of experience (Preferred), including at least 3 years of supervisory experience
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• Strong technical accounting skills, including GAAP
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel (vlookups, hlookups, pivot tables) and Word
• Effective writing, problem solving, communication and leadership skills
• Thorough knowledge of accounting and financial reporting systems (e.g. SAP, Oracle, Peoplesoft)
• Ability to resolve conflict and empathize with others
• Ability to represent the department and contribute to executing company objectives
• High degree of initiative, mature judgement and discretion
• Organization and time management skills
Desired Skills:
• Audit or Sarbanes Oxley testing experience
• Certified Public Accountant or equivalent
• Experience with Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), insurance accounting, and NAIC financial reporting
• Experience drafting audited financial statements
