The Mass Tort & Environmental Specialty Operations Senior Manager leads the Specialty Operations reinsurance claims function, overseeing complex environmental and latent injury exposures. This role is responsible for strategic leadership, operational excellence, financial oversight, and team development to ensure high-quality claim outcomes, regulatory compliance, and alignment with business objectives.
Role Overview:
The Mass Tort & Environmental Specialty Operations Senior Manager leads the Specialty Operations Direct Claims function, overseeing complex environmental and latent injury exposures. This role is responsible for strategic leadership, operational excellence, financial oversight, and team development to ensure high-quality claim outcomes, regulatory compliance, and alignment with business objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, manage, and develop a high-performing team, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, coaching, and compensation planning
- Provide ongoing technical guidance to claim professionals to ensure consistent and accurate application of policies and procedures
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Identify skill gaps and drive targeted training and development initiatives
Claims & Technical Oversight
- Direct the handling and resolution of complex claims involving asbestos bodily injury, environmental exposures, workers’ compensation, pharmaceutical, and other mass tort risks
- Oversee investigations, including evaluation of coverage, liability, damages, and contractual obligations
- Review and approve coverage strategies to ensure consistency, accuracy, and adherence to organizational standards
- Lead litigation and dispute management strategies, including oversight of internal and external counsel, experts, arbitration, and settlement negotiations
- Serve as a corporate representative or witness in litigation and other legal proceedings as needed
Operational & Strategic Leadership
- Establish and refine end-to-end claims and reinsurance recovery processes to improve efficiency, controls, and outcomes
- Monitor key performance indicators, operational metrics, and claim billings to assess trends and drive performance improvements
- Evaluate productivity, staffing levels, and workload distribution to optimize operations
- Ensure adherence to quality assurance standards, internal controls, and compliance requirements
- Track departmental performance against business plans and objectives
Reinsurance & Financial Management
- Oversee complex ceded reinsurance claims and recovery processes, ensuring accurate reporting and proper segregation of duties
- Lead financial forecasting activities related to claims, including budgeting and reserve adequacy
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including SOX, tax filings, and internal/external audits
- Identify and implement improvements in data management, reporting systems, and operational processes
Risk Management & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Partner with Legal, Finance, Risk Management, Internal Audit, Product, and external stakeholders to manage risk and resolve complex issues
- Monitor industry trends, case law, and regulatory developments to proactively identify risks and recommend mitigation strategies
- Oversee third-party administrators (TPAs) and vendors to ensure contract compliance, cost control, and service quality
Qualifications:
Experience
- 10+ years of relevant claims, insurance, or reinsurance experience
- Proven leadership experience managing teams and direct reports
Technical & Functional Skills
- Advanced expertise in environmental and mass tort claims, including investigation, evaluation, negotiation, and settlement
- Strong knowledge of insurance/reinsurance contracts, coverage interpretation, and case law
- Deep understanding of claims processes, systems, and regulatory requirements
- Ability to analyze complex data, financial forecasts, and operational performance metrics
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
