Cultivating Family with Allstate’s Good Hands

As a Hampton alumni, Shaundra feels lucky to have found a company that embodies the things she loved about her university.

Twenty years ago, Shaundra was preparing to graduate with a degree in mass media/public relations from Hampton University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Virginia. Throughout college, Shaundra had set her sights on a career at a big PR agency, but after interning in human resources at Allstate the summer before, a recommendation from an Allstate and Hampton Alum, she was drawn back to the company and accepted a full-time role in HR.

Looking back, she couldn’t be happier with her decision. Just 8 months after she started, Shaundra moved in the Corporate Relations department. She worked her way up and now serves as the corporate relations manager for Allstate’s Capital Region. In this role, which she describes as her “dream job”, she in responsible for engaging audiences and protecting the reputation of Allstate in the Capital Region area (Maryland, D.C., Virginia, West Virginia and Delaware).

Hamptonians, as they call themselves, are committed to finding ways to be successful while serving their community, looking out for each other and living into the family-feel of their school. Shaundra says she find the same atmosphere here at Allstate.

“There’s a family feel here and we all genuinely want to do good, both for the business and the community.” And when thinking about bringing on more talent from HBCUs and other areas of diverse backgrounds, Shaundra says, “the spirit to reflect the customer base and the communities we serve are always top of mind.

Shaundra’s pride in Hampton constantly shines through as she encourages Hampton graduates to consider Allstate and connects with employees from other HBCUs to continue driving the conversation around how to best enrich the organization’s talent and culture. Shaundra felt certain of what her path would look like but decided to take a chance of Allstate and she has never looked back. When considering about future graduates, she wants them to explore as many opportunities as possible, even once you’re at a company, something she has been able to do at Allstate.
