Employee Spotlight: Randy, Governance Risk and Compliance Expert

We sat down with Randy in our Tempe, Arizona office to learn about how he helps to secure our customer’s data as a Governance Risk and Compliance Expert.

“I joined Allstate in March 2019 as a Lead Cybersecurity Risk Assessor for the, before transitioning into my current role as a Cybersecurity Governance Risk and Compliance (GRC) Expert for the GRC Consulting Services Group. As part of my role, I help drive strategic initiatives for the GRC Consulting Services group. I previously worked for the state government in cyber security for nine years before deciding I wanted to change career paths and join a corporate organization.

Part of my daily tasks include servicing our business partners and GRC teams in consultation requests that span across multiple security domains. One of the strategic initiatives I am helping with is called the Cyber Risk and Control Lifecycle Program (CRCL), which is helping address some of the major challenges we face in unifying or streamlining our compliance program into a single, more efficient activity that will address different regulatory, statutory, and contractual cybersecurity requirements. We are building capabilities that will help ease the burden of multiple assessments for our business. This ultimately enables us to better protect our sensitive information, keeping our good hands promise.

Being able to work in cybersecurity really motivates me, knowing that I am part of a team that helps to protect people from threats. This work is never ending and there is always an opportunity for growth and improvement.

One of the things that I’m most proud of is that I was able to enhance the risk criticality engine that is used by multiple teams at Allstate. The overall reception was positive, which lead to further conversations regarding how we could continue to mature this important capability.

In the short time that I’ve been here, I have experienced the values that convinced me to join the company initially. The overall work culture is amazing, there is a great work-life balance and the team atmosphere is supportive. The leaders do not dictate what they want, instead they mentor and coach the employees, which creates an overall happier work environment.

I’ve noticed that Allstate lets you go the extra mile; allowing you to join other teams and grow personally and professionally. Employees can also volunteer for organizations that interest them in their community.

Something I would tell anyone interested in joining the company is that they need to be driven, professional and motivated. Allstate will give you the opportunity to learn new skills and lead initiatives, so you need to have a good work ethic and committed to own things from start to finish. You WILL succeed as long as you have integrity and keep yourself open minded.
